Yes. We are a community group who welcome all ocean swimming lovers.
Please note that we do not provide any water safety during the swims. Every swimmer should be confident in navigating open water and able to swim 1km of continuous freestyle or more - a Bondi bay swim is 1.3kms. Swimmers should also be confident getting in and out of the surf.
The Salties is always on - we don't miss a Friday.
We will always run but depending on the weather (swell, wind etc.) we will shorten the swim or opt for a teabag (light dip) and early coffee.
We meet at the North Bondi Ramp in front of the North Bondi RSL at 6:15am every Friday.
The run is not compulsory but encouraged. The run is a lap of the soft sand and roughly 1.8kms. The run is a great opportunity to meet others in the group and especially important in winter to warm up prior to the swim.
The swim is 1.3kms and usually kicks off at about 6:30am after the run. We swim from the north end of Bondi to the south, stopping just outside of Icebergs and in line with the last big pine tree of Campbell Parade. At Icebergs we wait for the entire group to arrive before swimming back to the North. We are all done by 7:10am
The majority of the Salties wear a wetsuit from June-late November.
If you already have a surfing wetsuit these are fine to swim in, otherwise, you can purchase a swimming wetsuit. Most of our swimmers wear 2XU wetsuits. You can purchase 2XU wetsuits online on in their Paddington store. Please email us for discounts.
Disclaimer: Bondi Salties is an informal group who meet at the North Bondi Ramp and swim at 6:15am, on a Friday. They swim from North Bondi to South Bondi and back, approximately 700 metres each way. Each swimmer has a personal responsibility to decide whether or not they swim on any particular day. They should only swim if they are completely confident about the conditions of the surf, ocean and weather that they are choosing to swim in as ocean swimming can be a dangerous recreational activity. All swimmers have a personal responsibility to determine that they have the physical condition to enter into and complete a swim safely without any water safety assistance from other swimmers or the group as a whole. If a swimmer has any existing physical condition or any doubt as to their ability to complete a swim they should have a medical check-up first. Swimmers under the age of 18 should only swim if accompanied by a parent or a person who has parental responsibility for them. Swimmers should be aware that there is no water safety nor insurance in the event of sustaining injury etc…
If you choose to swim at any other time or on any other route, be it with Bondi Salties, or with friends whom you have made through the Bondi Salties, the same applies.
